Orava Dam
Only a 1 hour drive from Chalupa Ria!
The Orava Dam was built in 1954, at the expense of 5 villages, which were submerged as a result of the damming of the river.
One of the five villages that were lost to the dam was the village of Slanica, which was actually the birthplace of the Catholic priest Anton Bernolak, who codified the first Slovak literary language.
Today, all that remains of Slanica is the Church of the Holy Cross that proudly stands on the village hill, which in actual fact now forms the island.
